installation
Corridor of the Crossroads Centre, Peowiaków 12 St. (ground floor)
“Love and art do not encompass what is beautiful, but rather what becomes beautiful because of them”.
Karl Kraus, 1874-1936
“À la recherche du temps perdu” (In Search of Lost Time), a novel by French writer Marcel Proust written between 1908 and the year of his death in 1922, is a book that helped Jozef Czapski survive his imprisonment in a Russian prisoner of war camp during World War II, when he recalled passages from the book and lectured about it. To this end, Czapski (1893-1993), a Polish writer and painter, created a series of notes, combining fragments of text, impressions and drawings. These notes were the main inspiration for my side wall painting for the Shapes of Beauty exhibition of the Open City Festival in Lublin. Moreover, the corridor with its beautiful cradle vault seemed to me a good place to work with the idea of MEMORY….
All fragments of the text, single words and whole sentences, were taken from Proust’s original text (published by Gallimard), the German translation (Suhrkamp) and the Polish version (published by Oficina) and, last but not least, from Jozef Czapski’s notes. The intention of this wall painting is to create a space that will evoke memories and associations in anyone who enters this corridor….
